Clara and Jack met at work in Dundee. “I was on my first shift in a nightclub called Underground and Jack was my supervisor,” says Clara. “After the shift we started talking and it all took off from there."
"We went on our first date about a month later, for a pint at Duke's Corner in Dundee. When the bar closed we still wanted to keep chatting, so we went back to Jack's flat. We spent hours there playing the guitar and singing."
"Then he walked me back home and we shared our first kiss.”
An anniversary proposal
Jack proposed after the couple had been together for six years. “We were away in Crieff before our anniversary, to spend some time together after a tough year,” says Clara. “It was the 12th October 2020 and we were walking towards a whisky distillery on a little path. Jack said he had to ask me a question. I turned back to see him on one knee and he asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes! I had never felt so happy in my life.
Shopping for the dress
“I discovered WED2B via word of mouth,” says Clara.
“My sister-in-law recommended it when we were discussing how expensive weddings were, and how there really was no need to spend a third of our budget on a wedding dress. I followed WED2B on Instagram for over a year before I booked an appointment at the Edinburgh store in January 2022. I had already shortlisted a few dresses and the staff were incredibly helpful. It was a unique experience that was tailored to my needs. I felt like a princess and got all the right advice. Then I walked out having said, ‘Yes to the dress’.”
Clara chose Kayden.
“The minute I saw it online I knew it was the dress for me,” she says.
“The laces, the shape, the back, the train... all of it screams my personality. When I tried it on, I could just picture myself on my wedding day. My favourite thing about the dress is the pattern. It’s just gorgeous and I can’t stop looking at pictures of it!”
An eco friendly wedding venue
“We got married at Comrie Croft, which is just a few minutes from where we got engaged,” says Clara. “It was important to us to find somewhere that had accommodation for most of our guests, as they'd be travelling from afar (my husband is Scottish but my family and friends were coming from Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain and Belgium). We also didn’t want our friends and family to incur a huge cost and we wanted an eco friendly wedding at a venue centred around the principle of sustainability."
"We booked the venue in March 2021 and got married on the 17th October 2022. Our first tour was online, during the pandemic, but we were sold. When we visited the venue in person, in May 2021, we knew we'd made the right choice.”
The big day
“On the day I woke up before 6am, having barely slept at all,” says Clara. “We were all staying onsite at the venue and I shared a bedroom with my four bridesmaids. I was up straight away, had a shower and joined my maid of honour for breakfast before makeup started at 6:30am. The venue has a gorgeous room for the bridal party to get ready in. So, we spent all morning there getting pampered, drinking fizz and having a great time.”
“My dad walked me down the aisle as ‘Stand By Me' by Bootstraps played in the background,” says Clara. “My husband's grandmother, my mother-in-law and my mum all read different blessings throughout the ceremony, which was truly beautiful."
"I don't think I'll ever forget the feeling of seeing my soon-to-be husband at the top of the aisle."
"I couldn't hold my tears back!”
A picturesque waterfall setting
After the ceremony there was a drinks reception with snacks. “The weather was sketchy most of the morning, with a steady drizzle that didn't really stop during the day, so we did all of our group photos indoors,” says Clara. “Then Jack and I went on a hike up to a waterfall that was a 15 minute walk from where the ceremony was taking place. It was worth it, despite it being incredibly muddy and wet.”
“When we came back down we were piped into the diner hall for speeches and food. Our first dance was to the redux version of ‘Backroads' by Lonely The Brave. It's a song that we've loved to listen to together from when we started going out. We then edited it and it changed to ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ by Michael Jackson, and it was hilarious!”
DIY decorations
“Our wedding venue was a DIY venue, so we chose everything,” says Clara.
“From the caterers to the decor, everything was our choice. Also, because it was an eco friendly wedding, we had materials from outdoors for decorations, such as wood, leaves, etc. It was all handmade, I’d been saving up jars for months!”
“We also bought a wine bottle each every week for six months, as we did a BYOB for the wedding but provided wine on tables. This meant that all the bottles were different. For dinner we served buffet-style food, which was delicious. It was all very laid back, which is what we wanted.”
Dancing the night away
“Our wedding cake was a two-tier vegan cake in burgundy and white, to match mine and my bridesmaids’ dresses,” says Clara. “Favours were chocolate rocky road fudge, handmade by a family friend. We also had a ceilidh band called Freereelin, who were absolutely incredible. It was the most fun thing for everyone!”
The best bits…
“The most memorable things were everyone staying the night before, which created a huge buzz on the day, and the magical ceremony,” says Clara. “We had an interfaith celebrant, Jane Paterson, marry us. She was truly fantastic and delivered a warm and emotional ceremony that none of us will ever forget.”
My top tips…
“Make sure you know what things you're willing to spend money on and what things you're not."
"You can make a lot of DIY decorations and save lots of money!"
"Find ways to make your wedding yours and not generic.”
