Helen’s story: “I couldn’t believe how good I looked”
A real bride shares her journey to feeling confident as an older bride, from early doubts to finding a dress that made her feel elegant, empowered and completely herself.
Our wed2b Ambassador Experience is about celebrating confidence, connection and highlighting the real life story behind each and every dress. So, following hundreds of applications, we chose seven real brides whose stories touched our hearts. They were invited to take part in a photoshoot to experience that wedding day magic all over again, while sharing their wedding dress shopping hopes and fears, highs and lows with us. This is Helen’s story about finding confidence, embracing change and saying yes to the dress at 51…
Helen's Key Takeaways
- “Don’t let age or expectations stop you wearing the dress you really want.”
- “Trust your stylist and keep an open mind.”
- “Choose something that complements your shape and makes you feel confident.”
- “You are the bride, no matter your age.”
Wedding dress worries
“Am I too old to wear a wedding gown?”

Helen went into wedding dress shopping feeling a real mix of emotions. “I was excited, curious, nervous and a bit apprehensive,” she says. “It’s my first marriage and I wasn’t even sure if I was too old to wear a gown.”
Like many women, she was also adjusting to changes in her body. “I’ve put on some weight and my shape has changed,” she explains. “I wasn’t sure how a wedding dress would look on me now.”
“I didn’t see anyone like me”
Representation was something Helen noticed straight away. “Every search I made online, I was seeing young women in wedding gowns,” she says. “I didn’t see any middle-aged women at all.”
That created a sense of uncertainty. “There’s this idea of what’s ‘appropriate’ at a certain age,” she explains. “Part of me thought I should be looking for a suit, but my heart really wanted a proper gown.”
Shopping for the dress
“I cried the moment I tried it on”
Helen visited the Baker Street store with her goddaughter Molly, not knowing quite what to expect. “I thought it might be like you see on TV, with a glass of champagne!” she laughs.
She had originally fallen in love with a different dress online, but when it wasn’t available in her size, her stylist suggested something else. “Fabien was the first dress I tried on,” she says. “As soon as I was buttoned in, I could feel it holding me in at the waist. When the curtain opened and my goddaughter saw me, she gasped… and we both cried.”
“I walked to the mirror and thought, wow… I couldn’t believe how good it looked. It just felt perfect.”
“It made me feel like a million bucks”
“My dress ticked every box,” says Helen. “It held me in all the right places, the lace arms gave me confidence and the neckline was just beautiful.”
More than anything, it changed how she felt about herself. “I felt like myself, but also like a new version of myself,” she says. “It made me realise this was really happening and that my life was changing for the better.”
“It gave me the confidence to accept my body as it is now. I loved how the dress showed off my shape.”
The wedding day

“Elegant, romantic and modern”
Helen married her partner on 22nd November 2025, starting at Islington Town Hall before celebrating in the historic Austin Friars pub in the City of London.
“It's a huge pub with beautiful high ceilings and we hired the whole space, which felt relaxed but elegant,” she says. “The decor was romantic bohemian, with pampas grass, sage green and gold details throughout.”
Her dress influenced everything. “It really shaped my whole look,” she explains. “I went for a vintage Hollywood feel with my hair and jewellery, pearl pieces and a romantic vibe running through the whole day.”
“A moment I’ll never forget”
“I’ll never forget looking at myself in the mirror that morning and thinking… this is me,” Helen says.
“And then my son telling me how beautiful I looked before walking me down the aisle. That meant everything.”
“Seeing my husband’s face when I walked in… he was just beaming. I felt it too.”
“It’s changed how I see myself”
“Wearing my dress gave me a confidence I didn’t expect,” says Helen. “It’s stayed with me beyond the wedding day. It’s helped me accept my body and feel at peace with how it’s changed. I feel more confident in what I wear and how I carry myself now.”

In her own words
My dress made me feel… “Beautiful”
I knew it was 'The One’ when… “I looked in the mirror and just knew… this was me.”
The best thing about my dress was… “All of it!”
I wish I had known before dress shopping that… “Middle aged women can wear wedding gowns and feel amazing.”
