Jackie and Ashley’s beautiful Cornish wedding
A stunning coastal venue was the perfect setting for this Cornish wedding. Our WED2B Real Weddings feature reveals more…
Jackie and Ashley met when Jackie was working in the pub in their village. “Our first date was a walk with my dog,” says Jackie. “We were both nervous, as we liked each other, but we kept saying we were just mates! But we both certainly felt love from the beginning.”
A sweet proposal
The couple had been together for about nine years and had two children when they talked about marriage. “Ashley took me into a shop for a birthday gift, as he had seen me looking at rings. He asked which was my favourite and I showed him.”
“Then, a few months later, he cooked me a date night meal, once the children were in bed. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He had one of the rings I had pointed out and it was stunning. This was on the 16th March 2016. I was overjoyed and couldn’t believe it! It was one of the best nights of my life.”
Shopping for the dress
Jackie headed to WED2B’s Newquay store for her dream dress. “My sister-in-law mentioned WED2B to me and I absolutely fell in love with some of the dresses online,” says Jackie.
“I visited the following weekend with my two daughters, as I wanted them involved with as much of the wedding process as possible, along with my mum and sister-in-law. We had a beautiful welcome and picked out a few favourites to try on.”
"I loved the very first dress I tried, it made my mum and sister-in-law cry. I went on to try more, but they just didn't cut it. The lady helping me brought out another style, which I really liked, and we swapped between my two favourites until I made my decision.”
“It was always the first one I tried, which was the Aden,” says Jackie.
“It was beautiful, simple and elegant and the fitted ballgown shape made my curvy figure look stunning.
The design had pockets too, which was a huge plus for me. I loved everything about my dress but I mostly loved how stunning it made me feel.” (For similar styles try Colleen, Elton, Franklin and Palermo)
A coastal Cornish wedding
The couple held their rustic sunflower wedding at the Cape Cornwall Club in St Just. “It overlooks the sea and areas where my husband used to fish,” says Jackie. “I’ve always been drawn to the ocean. My husband also loves golf and is good at it, so we thought where better then a golf club! We both love to visit, although for me it’s for the view rather than the golf.”
“Plus, the team at Cape Cornwall Club made everything run so smoothly. They’re all absolutely amazing and without them our day wouldn't have been the same.”
The big day
“We stayed at the venue the night before, so we could get ready there,” says Jackie. “I was in my room with my mum and daughters and my husband was in his with our sons. We went down separately for a wedding morning breakfast then up to our rooms, where I had my hair and makeup done.”
“My mum gave me away, as my dad passed away 10 years ago,” says Jackie. “I always said my mum would be the one to do it once I lost him. My bridesmaids walked in to James Arthur’s ‘Love in the Stars’ and I walked down the aisle to a steel band version of ‘A Thousand Years’.”
"During the ceremony my son read a poem and my daughter was going to do a reading but got nervous, so the registrar did it instead. Our registrar gave us a beautiful Cornish wedding blessing too, which was truly stunning.”
“Following a couple days of rain, our wedding day was beautifully sunny and warm,” says Jackie. “Blue skies all round and we were so happy. After the ceremony we had drinks on the terrace, then mingled for a while. We sat down to eat at 4pm when we all gave speeches, myself included.”
“There was a delicious hog roast and then we went off for a stunning sunset shoot for an hour, just us and our photographer. It was so special and magical.”
"I couldn't have asked for a better day. There were many tears of joy and I still find myself getting choked up at the pictures and videos. I still don't think that it's sunk in that I've finally married my best friend and soul mate after so many years.”
Sunflowers and seaside blues
The couple had a rustic theme with sunflowers and touches of grey and blue for colour. “We’ve always loved the rustic look and sunflowers are one of my favourite flowers,” says Jackie. “Perfect for August, too. Blue is one of husband’s favourite colours, so we added that as well.”
“A few more guests arrived for the evening, while we were off for our sunset shoot, then we had our first dance,” says Jackie. “It was truly a magical day and evening. It still feels just as amazing today as it did on the day. I didn’t want to take my dress off and I would do it all again tomorrow if I could!”
The most memorable moments…
“Our first dance, to our song ‘Conversations in the Dark’ by John Legend, was very special,” says Jackie. “Also, having everyone we love dearly around us on our special day. Our sunset shoot, just us. Walking down the aisle to our song, feeling so nervous. Then seeing his face and it all faded away. I couldn’t wait to be his for life. The whole day was just perfect.”
My top tips…
“Just go with your gut feeling about everything,” says Jackie. “Don’t try to people please, it’s about you and your future husband. Let him be involved as much as possible as well, it’s his day too after all."
“Just go with the flow but, if something doesn’t feel right, change it and change it again. You only get this day once, so make sure you are completely happy with all the decisions and details. Make it perfect for you.”
