Real Weddings Wednesbury: Melody and Robert’s colourful wedding

Melody and Robert met almost seven years ago and got engaged in February 2019. "We were on a long weekend city break in York,” says Melody. “Rob proposed on the first night by sort of throwing the ring at me. We were by the river and there was no bending down on one knee, as there was quite a lot of goose poo! Despite that, we were ecstatic!”

A Covid-related delay

Unfortunately, after the proposal, the pandemic caused the wedding to be delayed by over a year. “We originally planned to get married in April 2020,” says Melody. “After three postponements, we finally tied the knot on 23 July 2021, with all our friends and family present and no restrictions. We had the best day ever!”

Bridal shops Wednesbury

Melody bought her dress at WED2B’s Wednesbury store. “I chose Dawson, a satin and lace A-line,” she says. “Everyone was very helpful and friendly, as we’d already been to two other bridal shops in Wednesbury. Dawson was the 22nd dress I tried on that day, but only the third at WED2B. I loved the detail on the front and the back, which is also very beautiful. I wanted a satin skirt and this one is fantastic. My mum also did my buttons up with a crochet hook, thanks to some great advice from the shop assistant!”

A beautiful venue

“We got married in the golf club next door to our church in Edgbaston,” says Melody. “It was very beautiful and the food was fantastic. It was also perfect because we could arrive on a golf buggy and we had alpacas join us for the drinks reception!“

The big day

“A family friend brought me to the church in his Morris Minor and my mum walked me down the aisle,” says Melody. “Some of our friends also sang in the choir at the church, which was amazing. It was the first time congregational singing had happened since March 2020, due to the pandemic and restrictions. Luckily the weather was perfect too.”

After the ceremony, there was a drinks reception at the church, where guests could also mingle with the alpacas. Then the newlyweds headed off to the reception venue in their golf buggy.

Animal magic

“Our colours were royal blue and yellow to match Rob’s football team (Birmingham City),” says Melody. “We also had a lot of giraffes, as I love them. My aunty made our wedding cake and I made origami boxes for favours. Plus we had 90 metres of bunting, which my mum and bridesmaid kindly made.”

“In the evening there was a live band but my mum also surprised us with an ABBA tribute of ‘Super Trouper’ just like in the Mamma Mia film!”

My top tips…

“Enjoy the day and take time to make the little things personal, because those are the things you and your guests remember,” says Melody. “Lastly, definitely have a videographer!”
