Our complete guide to wedding veils
Everything you need to know about this beautiful accessory

Wedding veils are such an evocative accessory. Chances are you’ll never have worn one before and you most likely never will again! It’s also the one accessory that will truly make you look and feel like a bride. So, how do you choose the right one?
Veils were traditionally worn by different cultures for a variety of reasons, everything from symbolising purity and modesty to warding off evil spirits. For modern brides, they can add elegance, glamour or even a vintage feel, and are something that’s totally unique to this special day.
Below, our bridal experts have put together their top tips on how to choose between the different wedding veils and how to wear one with style. Also, for more expert advice, you can head to your nearest wed2b where our staff can help you try on different lengths, offer styling tips, suggest matching accessories and so much more. Let's get started...
What veil length should I wear?

The idea used to be that the bigger your venue the bigger your veil. That’s why some lengths are still named after ceremony locations, such as ‘chapel’ or ‘cathedral’. And, if you are marrying in a very grand setting, a long veil can look amazing, while a shorter veil often suits a more contemporary do. However, these days, you pick the veil to suit you rather than your venue and your veil should complement the style of your dress and help to focus the eye on the key details.
Finding the right length…
- Elbow length
A stylish shorter option, elbow-length veils sit around 114cm long and finishes roughly at the elbow. It’s a great contemporary choice and also looks chic with a vintage style dress.
- Fingertip length
Fingertip veils are very popular, as they give a nod to tradition but still feel modern. Falling to the ends of the fingers, about 185cm, they’re also very easy to wear and not as heavy as some of the longer veils.
- Chapel length
Chapel length veils are elegantly long, at around 241cm. They typically extend beyond the length of the dress but not as far as a cathedral style. They add a classic feel and look great fanned out in photos.
- Cathedral length
A cathedral-length veil makes a real statement and will normally reach anywhere between 285cm and 320cm. This is a dramatic, classic veil that adds drama to your whole look. It’s the perfect choice for a spectacular dress and equally spectacular setting.
How many tiers?

Single-tier and multi-tier veils allow you to select the level of volume that's right for your look. You can also double up on veils to create a completely customised two-tier effect with just the right amount of oomph.
What is the blusher layer?
This is the layer that used to be worn over the bride’s face (to protect her modesty) during the ceremony. Traditionally all veils would have had two tiers for this purpose but modern veils now often only have a single tier, as many brides choose not to wear it over their face.
The perfect position
Most veils can be worn in a number of ways and where you place it really does create a different look. For example, wearing your wedding veil on the top of your head gives it a more traditional feel. Wearing it on the crown of the head is a touch more contemporary, while the back of the head feels sophisticated and classic. Moving your veil even a few centimetres can transform your whole look, so try out different placements in store and with your hairstylist to see which one suits you best. Make sure you try it with different hair accessories too.
When should I wear my veil?
Most brides wear their veil during the ceremony and up to the wedding breakfast. Although, if you love it, feel free to wear it all day long, particularly if it’s a shorter veil! If it’s a longer veil that might hamper your dance moves, consider swapping it for a pretty comb or headband after the ceremony. This will help to create two looks in one and means it won't get in your way when it’s time to hit the dance floor.
To embellish or not to embellish?
The trim or beading on your veil doesn't have to mimic your dress's details perfectly, but it's lovely when they complement each other. For example, a lace dress works well with a veil decorated with lace appliqués, while a satin gown might look amazing with a satin-edged veil. Alternatively, if your dress is heavily embellished a simple veil with few details will let the dress shine through. On the other hand, an understated gown can look fabulous with a more decorative veil. Whatever style you choose, just remember your veil and your dress need to work together rather than competing for attention.
Still not sure which wedding veils are for you? Here are some of our most poplar styles to inspire you…
Plain wedding veils

If you’re not sure about veils, or you want to keep you look simple and understated, then a plain veil is the one for you. Unembellished tulle can look absolutely magical and is one of our most popular styles. Alternatively, add a bit of bounce with a double-tier veil edged in springy horsehair ribbon. This can look both contemporary or vintage, depending on your dress.
For small touch of embellishment, you could also try a veil with a delicate satin ribbon edge. It’s the perfect match for a timeless classic style or something in sleek Mikado.
Beaded wedding veils

However, why not turn it up a notch? Delicately beaded veils are the perfect middle ground between a plain veil and something more heavily embellished. A soft scalloped edge with glittering hanging crystals will work with both detailed and simple dresses. For even more wow-factor, Romee combines beading with a pretty scalloped edge and some sparkling sequins to catch the light.

Alternatively, for a more contemporary look, we love this single-tier veil. Scattered with shimmering pearls, it's a look that's straight from the bridal catwalks.
Lace veils

Lace veils can be both traditional and modern, depending on the style of the lace, the length and how you wear them. Classic Addilyn is edged in lace and sequins for a more traditional elegance, while chapel-length Imani features on-trend scattered appliqués.
3D florals

Finally, we have breathtaking 3D florals. A modern innovation and a recent catwalk favourite, these are a striking way to bring your veil into the 21st century. Zinnia does this in style by mixing delicate organza blooms with chic pearls, updating wedding veils for the modern bride.
