Our stylists have put together their expert guide to plus size wedding dresses to help you find the dress of your dreams. One that celebrates those fabulous curves from head to toe!
Plus size wedding dresses: Choosing the right silhouette
A-Line: If you’re not sure where to start with plus size wedding dresses, then the universally flattering A-line is the one to try first. Fitted at the chest to highlight your narrowest point, this style flows out gradually into an ‘A’ shape. The balanced proportions work brilliantly to draw the eyes upwards and create a beautiful nipped in waist, so it’s very flattering for all body shapes.
Ball Gown: Ball gowns have a fitted bodice, which flares out at the waist into a full skirt with plenty of volume. This shape is ideal for most body types and looks particularly great on pear-shaped figures.
Fit and flare: The classic shape of this fit and flare gown below is very flattering as it hugs the body and flares out just below the hips, accentuating the waist. It’s a style that’s very easy to wear and it will give you a feminine, curvaceous silhouette without restricting your movement.
Look for a lace-up back
The super-soft tulle here has been lined with satin and finished with delicate guipure lace appliqués, which cover the entire bodice and fall gently down the skirt. At the back, the clever lace-up design means the dress can be pulled in to create a perfect, flawless shape.
Add an underskirt
An underskirt, like our 163, will give your skirt extra flare and make your waist appear smaller. If you’d like a little more coverage for the daytime, you could also add a chic lace jacket, like our Alexandra. Then finish with a cute sparkly belt to really draw attention to that waist!
Plus size wedding dresses: The perfect accessories
Our Serena dress shows how A-line plus size wedding dresses flatter the figure and draw all eyes towards the waist. The strapless sweetheart neckline here is softly feminine and shows off the shoulders, while the delicate corded lace adds luxurious texture.
Turn around and the smart lace-up back looks great and also pulls in the waist to create the perfect fit. It’s a dream dress if you want to personalise your look, as it's super easy to accessorise. We've come up with a few suggestions below...
Here we’ve styled Serena with our lovely lace Anja straps. They’re perfect if you want a little more coverage or to flatter the tops of the shoulders.
At the back, thee straps create an on-trend keyhole style that’s been all the rage on the catwalks recently. And, what’s more, you can also remove them for the evening to create a second look!
A glitzy belt…
This dress is cleverly designed to flatter the figure and give you a great waist. So what better way to highlight this than with a gorgeous sparkly belt?
A bridal bolero…
For a totally different look pair this dress with our Halle bolero. It’s a great way to cover your arms and shoulders. Plus the delicate lace appliqués will add a little more interest to the back of the dress.
A little hair flair…
And finally, a beautiful floral headband or comb in your hair is the perfect finishing touch!
Choose the right underwear
We love the hourglass shape created by this stunning fishtail. And, don’t tell anyone, but it also has brilliant hidden internal support to give you a fabulous figure! Remember though, even if a gown has extra support it’s not a substitute for a good bra. Without the right underwear, you’ll be constantly pulling up your dress – not the most elegant way to spend your wedding day! Read our blog post for more advice on finding the perfect underpinnings for plus size wedding dresses.
Look for clever design features
Turn around and you’ll discover the seductive illusion neckline and keyhole back. They not only look gorgeous but also provide subtle coverage and extra support for those curves.
The lace-up back is the ideal way to create that stunning hourglass shape.
Accentuate your waist
Now you’ve got a fabulous hourglass silhouette you’ll want to draw attention to it! The perfect way is with a chic and sparkly belt, like our Tiffany or Estella belts below.
Add some drama
Finally, for a high fashion catwalk look, you can’t beat a cape. And it’s the perfect way to really make a statement and celebrate every inch of your figure and your look! Here we’ve styled Coco with our Zahara belt and fabulous full-length Hadid cape, with its exquisite shoulder detailing.
You’re guaranteed to make an entrance with this sweeping behind you down the aisle! For a shorter version check out our Mayfair cape too or for evening glamour a stunning feather bolero will do the trick!
