Why we love A-line wedding dresses...
Discover your perfect wedding dress shape
If you’re not sure where to start with wedding dress shapes, then flattering A-line wedding dresses are the ones to try first. It’s a timeless bridal silhouette that never goes out of style and one that really does suit everyone.
Fitted at the chest to highlight your natural waist, an A-line flows out gradually into an ‘A’ shape, with plenty of freedom and movement at the hips. The balanced proportions work brilliantly to draw the eyes upwards. It also creates a beautiful nipped in waist, meaning it looks great on every type of figure. What’s more, this style suits both lightweight, floaty gowns and ones with more structure and volume.
How to wear: A-line wedding dresses
An A-line silhouette is the classic bridal look. It's also probably the first one people picture when they think of a wedding dress. Therefore, it obviously lends itself to a very traditional wedding day. However, with a few modern twists this versatile style can suit any type of celebration. Try it in sleek Mikado or with a sexy split for a modern do, with lace and beautiful long sleeves for princess-worthy perfection or in lightweight tulle for a softer boho feel. We told you it was versatile!
It also works well with lots of design features, from off-the-shoulder straps and sweetheart necklines to illusion or keyhole backs. This means an A-line shape is a great foundation for any number of looks. Add a sweetheart neckline or lots of sparkling embellishment and it's super romantic. Alternatively, go for a plunging V-neck and simple spaghetti straps for something more contemporary.
Meet the slim A-line
Plus, if you like the look of an A-line style, then chances are you’ll also love a slim A-line. It comes with all the great qualities of its sister silhouette but fits a little closer to the body. The skirt is less flared, making this a gorgeous style for a boho wedding or a sunny ‘barefoot on the beach’ do. As it has less material a slim A-line can also be a little more budget friendly and is definitely easier to travel with than larger styles!
The ideal shape for…
Pretty much everyone! On apple and pear shapes an A-line creates waist definition and adds fullness to the lower body. It will also give a rectangle figure more curves by defining the waist, while hourglass brides can use the flared skirt to disguise curvy hips if they prefer.
Get the look
Our beautiful real brides are always brilliant examples of how to wear our different wedding dress shapes. Sarah chose a delicate lace A-line with scooped back for her afternoon tea wedding, and it was love at first sight.
“As soon as I put it on, I instantly lit up and felt so comfortable." she says. “It was so soft and light, and it certainly had the twirl factor I was looking for!”
Amazing lace
Gina chose a Chantilly lace A-line by Anna Sorrano with pretty illusion straps and a classic skirt decorated with ornate appliques. “It was really flattering, amazingly sparkly and the corset back made me feel great as it pulled me in at the waist." says Gina."The train was also really beautiful.”
Why not take inspiration from Gina’s look and try a delicate bridal belt too? It’s a great addition to an A-line style, as it highlights the waistline even more.
Real bride Grace fell in love with a bohemian, soft tulle A-line with a strapless semi-sheer bodice. “I chose it because it was the perfect mixture of bohemian and elegant,” she says.
“I added off-the-shoulder straps and I felt incredible. It hugged my figure perfectly and I got so many compliments.”
A festive treat
Lastly, Kelly’s corded lace A-line with elegant sleeves was picked out for her by a member of wed2b staff. “I tried on my dress and fell in love with it,” she says. “I had been adamant I didn’t want anything that had a princess look but instantly knew this was ‘The One’.”
It was also the ideal look for their fun Christmas-themed wedding, complete with Christmas trees, roaring log fires and glasses of warm mulled wine.
