What can I do before the big day?

“It’s important for everyone to have a good skincare routine, but it’s especially important for a bride-to-be,” says Maria Lucas, a bridal hair and makeup artist based in Bristol. “Your daily routine should consist of cleansing, moisturising and exfoliating regularly. We don’t recommend any facials up to two weeks before the wedding but make sure you drink plenty of water and hydrate more than normal in the lead up.”

When should I book my bridal makeup?

“Book your hair and makeup artist as soon as your wedding venue is booked,” says Maria. “That way you can secure your stylist and ensure availability, especially if you have a specific person in mind.”

Should I have a makeup trial?

“Yes, we don’t accept a wedding booking without a trial,” says Maria. “It’s such an important part of the process for us. Your trial is very beneficial to discuss your look, test different products and ensure your desired style suits you. I would recommended scheduling a trial at least four-months before the wedding.”

Georgia Dyer, a hair and makeup artist based in Essex, agrees, “My brides always have a trial before the big day,” she says. “Trials are so necessary to ensure the bride is ‘over the moon’ with happiness about her look.”

How much do you typically charge for wedding makeup?

“Our prices start at £300 for wedding hair and makeup on the day, and include a trial beforehand for the bride,” says Georgia.

What are the current bridal makeup trends?

“Soft-glam, it’s all about natural, glowing soft glam looks right now,” says Maria. “Although, trends come and go. For us, it’s important you look and feel beautiful and confident.”

What are the best products to use on your big day?

“In my hair and makeup kit I have various products based on different skin types and the bride’s personal preferences,” says Maria. “Most of our brides choose long-wearing, waterproof and high-definition products to ensure their makeup lasts throughout the day. Some of my of personal favourites include Charlotte Tilbury Magic Face Serum, Born This Way eyeshadows, Dior Nars foundation and Beverly Hills Brow Gel.”

“I also recommend using a setting spray to ensure long wear and always have a spare lipstick with you to touch up,” says Georgia.

Do you offer ethical and sustainable bridal makeup options?

“Yes,” says Maria. “Many brands now have ethical and sustainable options, which is very important in today’s world. These include cruelty-free, vegan and environmentally friendly products. Brides are definitely becoming more and more conscious of using these kinds of brands.”

How do you match a bride’s wedding dress style to their makeup?

“Colours and flowers are a key factor,” says Georgia. “Plus the neckline of the dress, which is so important when it comes to where the hair is going to sit.”

"I always take into account the dress colour and overall style,” says Maria. “For example, romantic lace dresses often suit soft, feminine wedding makeup looks, whereas a bold red lip might complement a modern and minimalist gown. Ultimately, all that matters is you look and feel beautiful and confident.”

What’s your advice for brides on a small budget?

“I would suggest just treating yourself to wedding hair and makeup,” says Georgia. “It will make you feel amazing, and all your bridal party want is to make sure you feel beautiful. They can do their own makeup!”

Finally, what are your essential bridal hair and makeup tips…

  • “If you don’t normally wear makeup try natural wedding makeup looks, your big day isn’t the day to go for something really different,” says Georgia.
  • “Go for a more matte makeup if you’re getting married in summer, as it will last longer.”
  • “Remember ‘getting ready’ photos make the most beautiful keepsake.”
  • “If you often have your hair up, then have it up on the day. If you always have it down, do that instead. It’ll make you feel more like yourself.”
  • “If your whole bridal party wear the same lipstick it really brings a nice cohesion to the group.”
  • “Skincare is as important as makeup, so look after your skin more than normal in the run up to the big day.”
  • “Individual lashes are great for giving the eyes a natural lift.”
  • “And, lastly, your makeup artist and hair stylist know what they’re doing. So, trust them!”
