London really is the ultimate location for a fabulous city chic wedding. There's a huge choice of venues, great transport links and endless stylish suppliers right on your doorstep. Plus, to top it off, just imagine your photographs with that iconic skyline as the backdrop.
So, if you love the idea of a stylish London wedding, read on for our top tips on how to throw the perfect city celebration...
The venue...
London has everything under the sun when it comes to venues. Contemporary couples should check out the art galleries, photography studios and cool industrial settings. Then there are the more bohemian choices, such as old churches, parks and wetlands, along with plenty for the traditionalists too. Think stately libraries, museums and majestic grand halls with stunning architecture.
Ayeasha and Stephen married at Richmond Park with a beautiful blue and rose gold colour scheme. "There was a wedding happening while we were on a date there once," says Ayeasha. "There was something about the deer and the beautiful park that cemented it in our minds."
London is also blessed with an abundance of delightful town halls. Sin Mei and Wai-Yee held their ceremony at stylish Marylebone Town Hall, then made use of the city's amazing parks with pictures in nearby Regent's Park. Katherine and Gary chose smart Devonshire Terrace, near Liverpool Street. "It has a glass atrium and stunning tree-filled gardens, which was the best of both worlds," says Katherine. "It had the industrial feel of a city wedding and greenery for those all important photographs.”
Helen and Terry married in Greenwich Registry Office's spectacular Victoria Hall. "We also love the military history of the area," says Helen. "So, for the wedding breakfast, we chose The Guardhouse at the old Woolwich Arsenal army buildings."
The practicalities...
The joy of a city wedding is that there will be plenty of accommodation options locally. Also, when you're choosing your venue, make sure you consider transport links too, as city parking can be limited. If you and your guests are travelling between venues, why not get right into the spirit of your London wedding? You could treat everyone to a ride on a classic red double decker bus, complete with ticket inspector and retro ticket machine!
The dress...
Your wedding dress is a hugely personal choice. So, if you want to wear a sparkling princess dress in a super modern venue or high-fashion design in a traditional church, you go ahead! However, a London wedding is the perfect backdrop for one of our more contemporary dresses, such as a Signature Collection sheath or dramatic mermaid style. Alternatively, something with a modern vintage feel looks fabulous. Our stylish shorter designs, like this elegant tea dress, have just the right vibe for the city streets.
WED2B bride, Ally, paired her cute tea-length style with a festive faux fur bolero and elegant heels for a stroll through the city, following a ceremony at Morden Park House. They even ended the night by dancing in the streets! "It felt like a scene from a movie and was just incredible," says Ally.
The suppliers...
Well, you'll be completely spoilt for choice when it comes to finding London-based suppliers. It's a good idea to head to one of the major London wedding fairs first, where you can see lots of suppliers all in one place. Plus, don't forget to check out our suppliers pages too. It's where you can find all the very best wedding companies in Greater London, such as wedding planner Natalie Ellen Weddings or florist Henrietta Hickling Florals.
This bespoke London-themed stationery by On Cloud Nine features beautiful vintage-look maps of the city. It's a brilliant way to set the tone for a stylish urban wedding.
When it comes to the look and feel of your London wedding, be guided by the type of venue you choose and your own personal style. For example, this modern cake by Simply Irresistible Cakes London would look amazing at funky Trinity Buoy Wharf, the industrial venue where Michael and Cantara held their wedding.
Alternatively, the shimmering modern florals of this delight by Pretty Yummy Cakes would be ideal for Georgina and Toby's colourful wedding at a minimalist white studio in Shoreditch. The photographs...
The London skyline is one of the most iconic in the world, so make sure you plan some time into your day for photos in front of the landmarks, such as Big Ben, Tower Bridge, the London Eye and more. Even if you're not near any tourist hotspots, the classic red phone boxes, London buses, unique street art and traditional black taxis all make for a great backdrop, too.
Why not make a weekend of it?
Lastly, if you have guests travelling in from all over the country (or the world) , why not turn your wedding into a weekend city break? There are so many fabulous things to do, from London Zoo, the V&A and the Science Museum to taking in a play or a musical. Consider hosting a welcome dinner on the first night, and giving guests a list of activity ideas. You could even throw in some cheesy 'I Love London' souvenirs too! Then, when the big day is over, a classic British roast in one of London's historic pubs is the only way to end the weekend in style.
