Wedding dress shopping should be exciting, not stressful, and a little insider knowledge can make all the difference. Our bridal experts have helped thousands of brides find 'The One', so we've gathered their very best wedding dress shopping secrets to help you feel relaxed, confident and ready to enjoy every magical moment of saying yes to the dress.

1. Shop on a weekday

If you hate crowds and like to have plenty of peace and quiet, then the first of our wedding dress shopping secrets is to visit on a weekday. You don’t need an appointment at any wed2b store but that does mean Saturdays and Sundays can be our busiest days. So, why not treat yourself to a day off work and make a full day of it with lunch or cocktails afterwards?

2. Have breakfast

Don’t go shopping on an empty stomach, especially if you’re going for a boozy brunch later. Nobody makes their best decisions when they’re hungry! It will also help ease any nerves or jitters you may have. Drink plenty of water and get an early night the day before too, so you feel your absolute best on the day.

3. Choose the perfect crew

At wed2b you can bring along as many friends and loved ones as you want. However, before you invite all your bridesmaids and close relatives, you might want to give some thought to exactly who will be the most help. A big group can quickly get out of hand, with conflicting tastes and unnecessary distractions. Two or three VIPs is often the best number to help you start your search without too many differing opinions. Although, if shopping on your own is more your thing, we have plenty of brides who do that too.

4. Bring some inspo and ideas

Don’t worry about bringing things with you, we want to know all about the day you're imagining. So, if you have Pinterest mood boards, Insta inspo or an actual scrapbook we’d love to see it. You can also try the new Discovery Tool on our website too, which allows you to flick through dress and save and share your favourites. Anything that helps our bridal experts paint a picture of your day will help them find your perfect dress. And, if you’re not sure what you want yet, that’s no problem. That’s exactly what our staff are great at!

5. Know your dress budget

Make sure you have a good idea of your wedding dress budget before you visit, so you can avoid disappointment. With thousands of wedding dresses costing between £599 and £999 we really do have something to suit every pocket. Just tell your bridal advisor what you’re hoping to spend and they’ll find you gowns that are both amazing and affordable.

6. And budget for accessories, too

Don’t forget to allow a bit more for sparkly - and practical - extras, too. Most wed2b brides leave with something else, alongside their dress, whether that's an underskirt, veil or glittering belt. So, make sure you know the budget for your entire outfit, including shoes, or maybe a number of outfits across the whole wedding celebrations (here are a few top tips on creating a whole wedding wardrobe).

7. Try on as many as you like

Don’t worry about trying on lots of dresses, either. We want you to find your dream dress, so you can try on everything if you’d want! We’ll pick out four at a time but, if none are right, then you can try another four, and another four… Although, wedding dress shopping can be a little overwhelming, so it’s also a good idea to take a break and then come back again. You don’t need an appointment, so just drop in anytime!

8. Allow two hours for your visit

It takes time to try on wedding dresses and often brides don’t allow enough. We recommend having about two hours for your visit, so you have plenty of time to chat to your advisor, browse the dresses and take your time trying them on, to get a feel for what looks amazing on you.

9. Trust your bridal advisor

Lucy and Jed

They really are the experts! And, you wouldn’t believe how many brides have ended up leaving with the wild card dress that our team suggested. Often nothing like the dress they thought they wanted! Wed2b bride Brady tried on all the dresses she liked but nothing felt quite right. “Then a member of staff suggested trying on a different style,” she says. “At first I was unsure, however when I put it on… it was definitely the dress of my dreams!”

Lucy didn’t even tell the staff at Hinckley wed2b what style she wanted. “They asked all the questions they needed to and then picked out dresses they thought would be to my taste. It just so happens they actually picked out ones I’d already screenshotted - fantastic!”

Shannon and Connor

And, if you’re feeling nervous they can help with that, too. “I was a little anxious about my shopping trip, as I suffer with body confidence and I’m very shy,” says real bride Shannon. “There was no need to worry, as I was made to feel amazing the second we stepped in the door. The lady who helped me find my dream dress was very experienced and knew exactly what to put me in. I can’t thank her enough!”

10. ...and your instincts!

Although, when push comes to shove, only you can make the final decision about the dress you wear on one of the biggest days of your life. No matter what anyone else says or how much anyone else likes it, if your gut instinct says it’s not ‘The One’, then it’s not ‘The One’. What’s more, if there are any aspects that are going to bother you, think about them now. Will the sexy plunging neckline make you feel uncomfortable? Is it strapless when you always wanted straps? Would you prefer more coverage for the ceremony?

Also, if you’ve found a dress you like that, with a couple of minor tweaks, can become a dress you love, then let us know. Straps and lace jackets can be added, underskirts can give more volume, belts can create shape and so much more. Also, every store has the details of great local alterations specialists who can turn up hems or tweak waistlines with ease!

 FAQs: Wedding Dress Shopping Secrets

Still have a few questions before your big dress-shopping day? You’re not alone! Our bridal experts have answered some of the most common wedding dress shopping secrets below — so you can walk into your appointment feeling calm, confident and ready to fall in love with “The One.”

When should I start wedding dress shopping?

Most brides begin shopping around 12 to 18 months before their wedding day. This gives plenty of time for browsing, alterations and finding accessories that complete your look.

Do I need an appointment at wed2b?

No appointment needed! You can visit any wed2b store whenever it suits you — just drop in, browse our collections and try on as many dresses as you like.

Who should I bring with me to try on wedding dresses?

Bring one or two people whose opinions you really trust. Too many voices can be overwhelming, and it’s important that the final decision feels completely yours.

What should I wear when trying on wedding dresses?

Nude underwear and a strapless bra work best, along with minimal makeup to keep dresses pristine. Comfortable shoes or heels similar to what you’ll wear on the day can help you picture the full look.

How long should I allow for my bridal visit?

Set aside at least two hours. That’s enough time to relax, chat to your bridal advisor, and find your dream gown without feeling rushed.

Can I take photos while I’m trying on dresses?

Absolutely — we love seeing those big smile moments! Photos are a great way to compare styles later or share your favourites with friends and family.
